Can a Volume Submitter accommodate a multiple employer plan?
Rev. 11/20/09; E-mail Alert 2009-18
Yes. A multiple employer plan is a type of plan that is sponsored by unrelated employers. Keep in mind that Master/Prototype plans still do not allow for this type of arrangement. If unrelated employers use a master/prototype plan document, it is an individually designed plan. However, under the EGTRRA defined contribution document rules, a multiple employer plan may make use of a volume submitter plan for the first time. An increasing number of individually designed multiple employer plans are converting to volume submitters since volume submitters are considered less expensive and less complicated.
